Ross operates approximately 1,000 retail outlets in 29 states. These stores are supported by four state-of-the-art distribution centers: two in the eastern Inland Empire area of the Los Angeles basin; one in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and one in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The planned distribution center in Shafter will be the company’s largest.
It was noted that competitive land prices, a big labor pool and availability of a BNSF railroad spur contributed to Ross’ decision to locate in the Kern County. Paramount Logistics Park also provides access to Highway 99, Interstate 5 and Highway 58.
Shafter City Manager John Guinn is excited of prospects for Ross’ distribution center to help diversify the economy, creating jobs for both professionals and blue collar workers.
Other companies who have recently located major facilities in Kern County include: American Tire Distributers, Caterpillar, Formica, Frito-Lay, Nestle/Dreyer’s, Pactiv, Railex and U.S. Cold Storage. Add in the millions of square feet in operations by ag companies Paramount Farms, Bolthouse and Grimmway, and it’s no wonder that Kern has been referred to as the next warehouse and distribution mecca.
