SmartAsset.com studied cities in America with both the highest and lowest minimum wages, Bakersfield coming in at #10 for the highest. Their study evaluated not only the statutory minimum wage from each state but also adjusted that number to the cost of living in each specific city. For example, the minimum wage in California is $10.00 across the board; however, in Bakersfield that income can go a lot further than it would in a more expensive city such as San Francisco or Los Angeles. Bakersfield and Tacoma, Washington were the only two cities on the top 10 list where the adjusted minimum wage was lower than the statutory minimum wage.
